Sermon on the Mount, part 15
Summary
Tamara Anderson and Wendi Christensen discuss Matthew 6:13 from the Lord’s Prayer about the importance of prayer and God's help in overcoming temptation and evil. They emphasize the need to submit to God's will and trust in His power, highlighting personal experiences of God's help in their lives. They also offer counseling techniques and biblical references to help individuals overcome sorrow and depression through faith and empowerment. Throughout the conversation, they emphasize the importance of recognizing and relying on God's peace, light, and goodness in times of struggle.
Main Takeaways
- From Wendi: “I love that Christ ends on that hope, with He's going to help us go through. That we're going to go through these difficult things, these temptations, even temptations from the evil one… we will find that help--even if it's going to be a while trudging through the difficulties of difficult moments, praying for strength and it's okay for us to pray for strength over our temptations. And to continue looking to that source of power and light and glory. Keep looking through that to that and we will overcome. We will come off conqueror with Him.”
- From Tamara: “I just keep going back to that cute saying that they say in the South that God doesn't give us more than we can handle, But tacking on "with his help." Really and truly, that's what life boils down to. And that's what this verse boils down to for me is that we can do anything with his help.”

Hello, and welcome to another episode of Bible, Women and Bathrobes. I'm your host Tamara K. Anderson and joining me today is my wonderful co founder of Women Warriors of Light, Wendi Christensen. Wendi, thanks for being here.
Wendi Christensen 1:17
Good morning. I'm so happy to be here with you, Tamara.
Tamara Anderson 1:20
We are so excited. We are going to finish the last verse of the Lord's Prayer. So we're in Matthew chapter six today. And this is a short verse. But there's a lot of content in one short verse. We talked about addressing Heavenly Father, last week, and thy will be done. We talked about giving us our daily bread forgiving us as we forgive our debtors.
Tamara Anderson 1:47
And now we're on to verse 13. Matthew chapter six, verse 13. And this is what it says. "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."
Tamara Anderson 2:06
And so I thought we'd kind of start off by just chatting about that first part of the verse And lead us not into temptation. Any thoughts there Wendi?
Wendi Christensen 2:20
Um, well, I don't think he's actually talking about going to just drag us into temptation, because that's not how he works.
Tamara Anderson 2:28
Yeah. Right.
Wendi Christensen 2:30
So we know we have temptations around us all the time, even Christ was tempted by by Satan, and had to go through a lot of things even though he never gave into that temptation. He was tempted. So I think we realized that that's part of mortality, that we're going to have all these temptations around us in this lifetime. And for each person, that's going to be different. I think that a temptation can be calling to a weakness that we might have, or some people have, you know, addictions that run in their family, or others might have, you know, the temptation to sleep in. It's not my favorite thing to get up in the morning. But I'm here today, like temptations come in many different forms. And I think that he's he's praying for us to actually overcome those temptations, right, because they are a part of mortality. How are we to overcome those temptations?
Tamara Anderson 3:28
Yeah, and avoid them? Almost, you know, I think I think that is what. And we can pray to have God help us avoid them. And I think that's one of those things that as I pause and think about it, I can see why the Savior prayed for that, as an example to us is that God can help us avoid temptations, if we ask for his help if we asked for his strength. And I'll be the first to admit, I do not pray for that every day. You know, there's so many other things on my mind when I'm praying, and it's kind of been a good reminder to me that great for this Tamara, pray for this for you, for your kids, for your family, because, my goodness, it seems like the world is full, full full of temptations. And so many of it is right there on our phones, you know, right?
Wendi Christensen 4:24
Yeah. It's interesting as you talk about that, had to pause and think for a second, like, do I do that too, I pray for my temptations. And I would say for me, it's, I it comes to me in the form of those weaknesses because I do pray to overcome my weaknesses, and that I depend on him to help me to overcome those weaknesses and those challenges that I face throughout the day, whether it be you know, with kids or husband and overcoming, you know, the, I guess the the challenge too.
Wendi Christensen 4:57
Sometimes I dwell on just me or I sometimes it's me, that's that temptation where I need to get outside myself and help me to overcome focusing and dwelling on just me and look to help other people around me. And maybe the challenges, again, a mortality that we all deal with. And whether it be that phone addiction, because we do have that, that social media addiction that really comes, or, you know, are the challenges of, Wow, this is really hard. This is really difficult for me to overcome and praying, depending on the Lord, please help me to overcome it. Please help me to do better in this area. Because we want to become better I think we strive to become better.
Tamara Anderson 5:39
Yeah, I agree. I remember. I remember when we lived in the South, and my two sons were diagnosed on the autism spectrum that so many times there's this saying in the South that God doesn't give you more than you can handle? Oh, girl, don't worry, God give you more than you can handle. And I just love Southern people. But I remember having heard this, I mean, I would get that comment a lot, because it was very obvious that I was at the end of my rope so many times with just trying to juggle the children that God had given me.
Tamara Anderson 6:21
And I remember hitting a point and just saying, oh, yeah, God does give you more than you can handle. I'm not handling life very well, right now, you know. And, and so I think there is a difference between not giving us challenges, because I do believe God gives us things that are harder than we can handle. But I came to modify that saying, to say, God doesn't give us more than we can handle with his help.
Wendi Christensen 6:56
That's beautiful.
Tamara Anderson 6:58
And it really changed my perspective on that saying because there were times I was just pounding on the doors of heaven, like, Dear God, this is too hard, I can't do this. It's too heavy, it's too much. I can barely take care of myself, let alone these kids with autism. I don't get enough sleep. And so therefore, I'm tired and more cranky than I normally am, you know, like, every single day for over a decade, you know.
Tamara Anderson 7:28
And, and I finally realized that it's not that God was leading me into temptation, it's just that the burdens that were placed on my shoulders, were very, very heavy for me. And there were times I really, probably did try to carry too much on my own. And, and so I had to learn to lean on him, and beg for his help and beg for his strength to help me get through whatever I was going to face that day, and sometimes getting me through minute by minute. And, and they weren't necessarily temptations, but they were just things that pushed me beyond my limits. It was beyond what I was able to bear. But beyond what I was able to carry on my own. I couldn't, I couldn't do it alone. I felt like I was breaking constantly.
Tamara Anderson 8:30
And I remember at that time, that a saying that I'd heard when I I'd read this saying when I was like, right after my senior year in high school, I was sitting down and I was reading a magazine. And this I don't think like this, don't usually stay with me. But this whole article was about, the greater the resistance, the greater the strength. And I remember and that was the saying it just it was one of those phrases that just stayed with me and stayed with me. And I think the reason it did is because God knew that same was going to become very, very important to me, throughout my life because I was going to face a lot of resistance, I was going to face a lot of things that were really hard.
Tamara Anderson 9:20
And, and so it talked in the article about how when you work out that the muscles in your body literally tear and break, and they build back stronger and better. And that's what I felt like my life was like, constantly for a decade or more where I was just every day I was being ripped and torn and broken. And and I had to rely on God. I mean, I guess there was the option of I could have just totally, you know, thumbed my nose at God and, and said forget about it. I'm not I'm not leaning on you because you gave me two kids with autism, you know.
Tamara Anderson 10:05
But that wasn't who I was, I knew I'd had too many experiences before I had children that had taught me that God was really there. And they, he could help me through hard things. And so what that hard thing or that temptation was, for me was learning to go through difficult things, things that broke me, but built me back stronger. And I, and I learned that God could help me through it, even in those moments where I was literally crying. I Didn't have time to drop on my knees every minute, but where my stress level was piqued, constantly throughout the day, just trying to keep my kids safe and happy and taken care of and stuff like that.
Tamara Anderson 11:02
So does God give us hard things? Yes. Does he allow us to enter into temptation? Or put temptation in front of that? No, I think that's Satan's role. I think sometimes he does step back, kind of like when you read the story of Job, where he allows us to have temptation come into our life,
Wendi Christensen 11:27
right.
Tamara Anderson 11:29
But he is not the one bringing it Satan is the one that brings it into our life. So you know, any thoughts?
Wendi Christensen 11:37
Yeah, as you were talking, I thought, you know, it's as you were going through those challenging times as a mom. And I love that analogy of the muscle, and just the building in a tearing the tearing to build it up. And it reminded me of like, character was the word that came to me. God is building character, he is strengthening your character? Because I think it's, as he watches us go through those maybe temptations in our lives. How does it build our character?
Wendi Christensen 12:08
You know, we like to give our kids choices, do you want this? Or do you want this, to allow them to make decisions to allow them to know what to do and to kind of watch, you know, I have, I have teens in my house right now. So it's interesting to watch their choices that they're making. And some of them are great, and some of them are not so great. But what I see it doing is it's building their character as I watched them make those choices in their lives. And of course, you hope that they make good choices, better choices, choices that are going to be in their best interest.
Wendi Christensen 12:40
And sometimes, like I said, they don't make those but they're learning. They're learning from that. And it's so beautiful to watch. And I can only imagine that God is doing the same thing with us. You know, as we have these, maybe temptations around us these difficulties he's watching. So he's there by our side with our Savior, of course, watching to lean and to help whenever we need that. And that's a beautiful thing. For him to be able to watch that character I'm sure being built in us, as we make these choices, with the things that are challenging around us, those temptations around us and where we're gonna take them and how we're going to grow and who we're going to become because of
Tamara Anderson 13:25
Yeah, yeah. I love that. I know as I was diving into the word, just temptation. Yesterday, I'm like how many times this is word show up in the scriptures. I found it interesting that there were a couple of times when it showed up. And one in particular that really jumped out at me was in Luke chapter eight. And it talked about the parable of the sower, you know, when the sower went forth, so many sowed his seeds, and there were four different places where the seeds fell. And I found it interesting, that he said this. "They are on the rocks." So the seeds that fell on the rock, this is Jesus interpreting the parable. He says, "They on the rock are they which when they hear, receive the word with joy, and these have no root, which for a while be leave, and in time of temptation fall away."
Tamara Anderson 14:25
And so the the people who fall on the rock are those who have the gospel, who believe in Jesus who believe in God. And then when a hard thing happens, or when a temptation happens, they say, forget it. I'm out. I'm out God would never have let this happen to me. It's in those trying and soul wrenching times when they give up. And having walked through that before I know how hard and pressing and heavy that load can feel.
Tamara Anderson 15:11
And I am thankful that even in my greatest pain and agony and sorrows and try and understand what true faith meant, and why God will let that happen to somebody like me and my family, not only once but twice. That it's staying true in those times have difficulty staying true in times of darkness and temptation and things that try our souls because perhaps we don't understand what living with faith means. Anyway, any thoughts? Before we move on to that next part of the verse Wendi?
Wendi Christensen 15:56
No, I think you just did a beautiful job of just reminding us how difficult temptations can be, you know, these challenges that we are faced with around us. But how beautiful it is, if we turn our look to our Savior, Jesus Christ, that really it's just reaching out, but it is, it's sometimes too simple that we forget to do it. Or we forget to stop and just reach out to him amidst all of the things, or we don't really know how, and we're not quite sure. And I think that that's the beauty of having people around us that can remind us are those simple little touch points. And I know we'll talk about that and other places and scriptures, but to still simple touch points to help us to get through the temptation that gap, we're not alone. Now, whenever we reach out that help is always there to get us through them. Yeah.
Tamara Anderson 16:50
Yeah. Awesome. Let's go to that next part of the verse in Matthew chapter 13, or Matthew 613, he says, But deliver us from evil. And I love this part of the verse because there are times in life where we feel like we are in an evil spot, you know, maybe we didn't intend to get there or something happens. Or perhaps, I found sometimes Satan often attacks with those feelings of sorrow and anger and depression, like feeling like giving up when I'm about to do something really good, that Satan will enter and say, hey, you know, and he just, I feel bogged down and weighed down. And, and I have a sister who struggles with major depressive disorder. And she often talks about how, when you're in the depths of depression, and I mean, she struggled with it for decades now. That often it's hard to feel God's Spirit. And
Wendi Christensen 18:12
It's hard to feel anything, I think,
Tamara Anderson 18:14
yes, well, except that heavy.
Wendi Christensen 18:18
And numb
Tamara Anderson 18:19
yeah, heaviness and numbness and, and that she, you know, she reads her scripture, she prays, but it's hard to feel God's influence in her life when she's in those dark moments when she's in those dark places. And so I thought I'd open that up to you how I mean, that plea for deliverance from evil from from, um, because Satan takes advantage of any of those times when we're feeling down to just just like, throw a chain around our necks and just pull really hard. I don't know how to describe it, but that's what it feels like sometimes. Any thoughts on that? I know you counsel women all the time who feel that way?
Wendi Christensen 19:03
Oh, awesome. Yes. All the time. All the time. It's interesting, as you're saying that I see I saw this, this image and I'm not even a Star Wars fan. It's my husband and my boys, right? But all of a sudden, I like saw this Darth Vader that's just constant when whenever you're going to have like those really good movies, you know, there are plots, you always have the good and the evil, right? The really strong and the evil. And this is one of those, you know, times where you've got that. We live in times we're seeing the tech this all the time.
Wendi Christensen 19:35
You're right. And when I'm working with people, one of them one of my favorite things to teach them is how do we overcome to recognize seeing first of all in our lives, like how is he because I truly feel he brings the opposite of what God does our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ that I feel like they bring peace and light and calm and goodness those things come from them. And Satan often brings that like you're describing that heavy in that numb and that fear and overwhelm and exhaustion and you're not enough, that's probably one of your all the time with women. They just feel like they're not enough, they're not doing enough, they're not being enough, they're not able to accomplish enough, because we women like to be high achievers.
Wendi Christensen 20:20
And it's difficult when you're in the throes of deep despair, anxiety or heavy trial, to feel all consumed by that. And I do feel like Satan does take those things. And it's like, you can feel that heaviness, or some depression. We all I don't know of anybody who's never ever felt some depression in their lives, whether it's just a situation that they go through that brings it, or whether it's actually clinically diagnosed depression, but I think every every one of us can identify with feeling that overwhelmed that despair bubble, he takes it Satan takes it and he just like you said, he runs with it. He has a heyday with it. He exacerbates that feeling makes it even worse.
Wendi Christensen 21:06
And what I found is that in the Scriptures tell us if we resist Satan, if we flee from him, that we will feel the Lord helping and taking us and strengthening us. And so often I tell people, women and I work with people that I work with, cast them out, cast them away, tell them to take a hike, get rid of them. And what does that look like? In the name of Jesus Christ, I cast away depression, I cast away that feeling of anxiety and fear, I cast away those temptations that are weighing me down. That, like I said, that I've worked with a lot of people with addictions to, you know, when they feel bogged down by things that kind of are taking over, and feeling like they have no control on their lives, so that they can feel control come back, they can feel their Savior siding with them and strengthening them, giving them the power that they need to overcome that temptation in their lives. And he can do that.
Wendi Christensen 22:10
And sometimes it's telling seeing to leave, that allows them to feel stronger, to feel empowered, so that they can keep moving forward. Because it's one thing to deal with just depression. But it's another thing to deal with depression and Satan, putting more and more bricks on that depression. But if we can be free from those bricks, then it feels like, okay, I can get through this now, because I feel the strength of my Savior helping me on those days where I feel so heavy, and so weighed down.
Wendi Christensen 22:43
And I don't know how I'm gonna get through it. I don't know how I'm going to get off the couch and get up and go do stuff. Or when I've got kids around me that need me need my help. I've talked to so many women that will say I can't even get out of bed. Then how do I do this? How do I get up and go do it at least helping to empower you to get rid of that evil, right to ask for deliverance from that evil, that evil temptation or Satan actually attack? And you can tell and to cast him away? Get him out of there, tell him to leave. You always have the power as this as a son or a daughter got to do that? Yeah.
Tamara Anderson 23:21
Well, I love that. And that's one of the things that we we really promote in Women Warriors of Light is A. connection, B. protection, protection from the adversary would teach how to cast him out. Because God, Light always can overcome darkness. Now, that doesn't mean that if you have something like a major depressive disorder that you shouldn't seek for medical help, or psychological health, like from a counselor. And so please, if you struggle with something like that get help. There are
Wendi Christensen 23:51
good resources
Tamara Anderson 23:52
and resources that God has brought to light. You know, in these times that can really help us. I have two children who struggle with depression. And so it's been for one of them, we got the medication right the first time. And with the other one, it took us several years. And we've finally had to do a DNA test to see what medications. We found, you could do that I didn't even know about it. But we found out you can do a medications test to help. And we finally found the medication that would help this child with depression and it's made a huge difference. You know, so
Wendi Christensen 24:31
I know prayers and scriptures. They don't I always tell people, they don't take it away. They certainly are going to take depression away, but they can help bring light. And light can help. But you're absolutely right. Seek the help. There's so much help out there nowadays than there used to be even 10 years ago. We've come light years ahead of where we used to be with mental illness and mental illness is a real thing. So definitely seek that Help because there's so much help available.
Tamara Anderson 25:02
Yeah. I love that the word used in this verse is deliver deliver us from evil. And I find it so interesting that this is the Savior's plea in his in the Lord's Prayer to Heavenly Father, the and and I kind of looked at that word deliver because Jesus Christ is known as that's one of his titles is The Great deliverer. And I looked back through scripture, and I found several verses like, through throughout time where, you know, like King David "
Tamara Anderson 25:38
Thou has delivered my soul from the lowest hell." You know, so if you feel this way, you're not alone, it's been going on for eons here. "Thou callest in trouble. And I delivered thee."Psalm 81:" In Isaiah, listen to this, "behold, for peace, I had great bitterness, and thou hast in love to deliver to my soul delivered from the pit of corruption, or thou has cast all my sins behind my back." I mean, there's so there's so many scriptures. And I find it interesting that the Savior's plea in the garden, you know, not many years later, after he delivered this prayer was for that cup to pass, and it didn't.
Tamara Anderson 26:29
And so I find it kind of ironic that here, he's teaching us to pray this. And it's because of our Great Deliverer that we can have Him help us through these times of evil and hardship. But for him, there was no deliverance on that day, you know, that he had to bear those sins, so that he could deliver us.
Tamara Anderson 26:56
So I just, there's this immense sense of gratitude that this is what he's teaching us to pray for, because of who He was and what he did. For each of us. There was just such tremendous love. Sorry, I'm getting all emotional again.
Wendi Christensen 27:15
Well, and you know, it's interesting, as, as you're saying that, and I'm looking at the Scripture. You know, we've talked about temptation and an evil that he's praying, like, help us to, to, to be delivered from that evil and from those temptations. And then I love the next part, and I think it leads really well, if you're okay with,
Tamara Anderson 27:36
yeah, go ahead.
Wendi Christensen 27:37
It says, "for thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever." That brings just so much hope as you're talking about deliver, and what Christ did for us. And look at that faith, like, He knows who his who his Father is. Like, he has faith in God's kingdom, and his power in his glory, forever like to be able to go through and trudge through all these hard and difficult things like we've been talking about, where life just can feel so heavy and numb and overwhelming, and just unbearable at times.
Wendi Christensen 28:17
But to then turn and look at the power of God, and His glory. And everything that he brings with that and to remember, who we are and where we come from, and how that he will always triumph, right? That good will always triumph over bad. And the heavy and the rotten and the ugly.
Wendi Christensen 28:41
Like, that sometimes brings me peace that, you know, in these last days, they're so hard and they're so difficult sometimes that all the trials and the challenges that we face and you that you watch our country facing you know, we just we have so many things and we watch our everyday like our children battle things and the things that we battle, but to just stop and reflect and go by you always have hope in, in God because He will try out, he'll overcome, we know who's gonna win in the end. And I think that's what Christ is referring to. That power that kingdom that glory, we know who's going to triumph in the end, we just have to have faith in Him. Have faith in Him who will triumph him who has the power, who has all of the glory. Let's hold on to him through all of those challenges. And we will overcome as well because he will. Yeah.
Tamara Anderson 29:34
I also think it's a reminder of the Savior once again submitting to
Wendi Christensen 29:41
Yes,
Tamara Anderson 29:42
and when you're praying, this is something you should do. And I have not always been good at that. Especially when I really want something. I'm like you know, I'm praying for it ferociously, you know, and I don't want to say Thy will be done. Do you know what I mean? I want to say A what I'm asking for is a good thing. It's not bad. Can't you please just, you know, help me out here, heal my son's from autism. Surely I know you can I know you have the power. But I think that's what true faith is.
Tamara Anderson 30:19
And I love that the Savior closes with this, that Thine is the kingdom, the power--that all things are according to God's will. It's not ours. And he's almost aligning himself right there with the Father and saying, I'm praying for these things. But you know best, you know. And I'm like, oh saying that in a prayer where you are just in the depths is sometimes really hard.
Tamara Anderson 30:48
You know, I know you can remove me from this pit. But maybe you have to stay there for another year, or six months or something like that. But the good news is, he won't leave us alone in that pit. Do you know what I mean? He will come and abide with us, and help us through one moment at a time.
Tamara Anderson 31:10
And so it's that act of submission at the end of the prayer, and that's something that I don't say in every prayer, either, you know, dear Father, I submit, I submit. And that's, that's hard. That's an art. It's easy to say in good times. But it's really hard to say in hard times.
Wendi Christensen 31:35
Especially like you were saying, when you've been in something for a long time, and you've been sitting there for so long. It's hard to stay submitting to that and to keep holding on to that faith.
Tamara Anderson 31:47
Yeah,
Wendi Christensen 31:47
but but sometimes it's that faith that can pull you through.
Tamara Anderson 31:50
Yes.
Wendi Christensen 31:51
That hope, not giving up hope.
Tamara Anderson 31:54
Yeah, that is hard. And maybe that's the prayer helped me to not give up hope while I'm still here. And this hard time, help these, these strong muscles that are being torn. Help me to build back stronger with your help, you know, to get through this temptation, or this evil or whatever I'm going through right now, with your strength. Because I do not feel strong enough right now on my own. And I need I need that power. I need that glory.
Tamara Anderson 32:27
It's interesting that he uses the word kingdom that's often you know, talked about God's kingdom here on earth. We talked about like kingdom come Thy will be done earlier in the verse earlier in the Lord's Prayer. But it's it's it's the reminder that ultimately, like you said, that good will triumph over evil or evil moments. Pray that Jesus will come soon so that that will happen.
Wendi Christensen 32:54
That's interesting. There's a I was looking at and the glory and referencing another scripture in First Chronicles 29:11, also says, "Thine oh Lord is that greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty. For all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine. Thine is the kingdom of Lord And thou are exalted as head above all." Isn't that beautiful? I just love that. And it's just such a good reminder. And I'm sure, that's what Christ is referencing all of that. He's referencing in that, just bringing it all back to that beautiful light, to go, We're gonna make it do this. We have so many good things coming. Just to remember that right?
Tamara Anderson 33:43
Oh, sure. My goodness. All right. Let's wrap it up, take away from today's discussion.
Wendi Christensen 33:52
Just you know, I love that Christ ends on that hope, with he's going to help us go through. That we're going to go through these difficult things, these temptations, even temptations from the evil one, right, just like he did and withstood. He was such a great example of that for us. And that we have so much to look forward to, and praying for that deliverance from our from God that He will deliver us from all of these things that there is hope, as we continue to turn to Him, that He will help us.
Wendi Christensen 34:26
There's always hope that we will find that help--even if it's going to be a while trudging through the difficulties of difficult moments, praying for strength and it's okay for us to pray for strength over our temptations. And to continue looking to that source of power and light and glory. Keep looking through that to that and we will overcome. We will come off conqueror with Him. I love it! It's such a beautiful thing.
Tamara Anderson 34:51
For me, I just keep going back to that cute saying that they say in the South that God doesn't give us more than we can handle, But tacking on "with his help." Really and truly, that's what life boils down to. And that's what this verse boils down to for me is that we can do anything with his help. We can get through temptation we can get through evil, we can get through anything that that life puts us in or throws us in or that were dragged feel like we're being dragged through-- with his help.
Tamara Anderson 35:31
And he is good and glorious, and we can praise Him forever. Even even know hard when we don't feel like praising and there's been times when I didn't feel like praising. But he stood with me even in those times. So he is good. God is good.
Tamara Anderson 35:52
All right, my friends. Pray for these things. Pray that God will help and strengthen you in temptations and evil today. And remember that he can he is powerful and glorious beyond all I love that verse quotes close with that verse in Chronicles. What was it chronicles? Do you still have that?
Wendi Christensen 36:13
1 Chronicles 29:11, "Thine Oh Lord is that greatness and the power and the glory and the victory, And the majesty. For all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine. Thine is the Kingdom old Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all."
Tamara Anderson 36:31
