Tiffany Fletcher
00:01:37.020 - 00:02:37.190
Well, today we are continuing a series that we started several weeks ago talking about how to clothe ourselves in the armor of light. So we've talked about several things about girding our loins about spring spiritual warfare.
We've talked about the breastplate of righteousness, shodding our feet shield. And today we are talking about the shield of faith. And if you would like to read along with us, that's going to be in Ephesians chapter six.
We're going to be in verse 16 today. So I'm going to read that to you. Above all, taking the shield of faith wherewith you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
I love this verse. I love this verse because it talks about above all, we need this, we need faith.
So I want to kind of start off our, our discussion today, Tamara and Bonnie, with what is faith? What is faith and where can we find it? So Tamara, let's start with you.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:02:37.490 - 00:06:06.226
Ooh, this is something that I have actually been pondering a little bit in preparation for this. I'm like, how do you define faith? You know what I mean?
And, and I've also been thinking, and why did he put it as a shield you know, I was thinking in battle in terms of that, and I was thinking that a shield, first of all, is probably one of the most versatile pieces of armor we can have, because it can protect your front, it can protect your head, it can protect your back, it can protect your knees. You can move it around where you need it most or wherever the attack is coming. It's like an extra layer.
So, you know, you've got all your physical armor on, but then you've got this shield of faith, which is like an extra layer of protection. And I was thinking, how. How does this kind of, I don't know, blend together? Because faith is a belief in God, right?
It's a belief and something that, like, I haven't seen God in this life, you know, face to face, eye to eye.
I'm not one of the prophets in the Old Testament or something like that, but I have come to know him, and I think faith is one of those things that, that you kind of. I find it amazing when I look at children to see their incredible and pure faith. Like there is no doubt they know there is a God.
And they sing about God. I. I work with the kids at church, and it is so beautiful to see their pure faith, their pure belief in God. Of course. Of course there is a God.
Of course. And they sing about him. And it's so, so sweet. And I think it's as we get older that those skeptical and those. Those doubts come in. And.
And so for me, faith is that belief in something that we can't see. But. And I think we find this definition in Hebrews, right? That it's the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
It's not something we can see, but it's something we can feel. And that it makes such a difference. It's evidence. It's kind of the assurance that it's there.
And so I can look back on my life and I can see plenty of evidence of God in my life, you know, and so I think it's something that you start small, and then there's moments of testing and trial where you're just like, this is hard. I'm. I'm taking these steps into that, the darkness, you know, it's that trust in the Lord with all your heart.
You know, we learned that we quote that from Proverbs.
I've got a little plaque back there, in fact, behind my computer that when my computer is closed, that's what I see is trust in Lord, learning to trust him in those hard times and believing that Everything is going to work out. When you don't know what that working out is going to look like, trusting that he does and that he's got my best interest at heart, that's tough.
I don't know. And I. I'm sorry, I kind of went way beyond just asking what faith is, but. But I. These are the thoughts that are kind of been in my brain.
Tiffany Fletcher
00:06:06.418 - 00:06:52.870
Oh, I love it. I love it. Thank you.
And I love the visual of you talking about how it's a shield, that it's like an added layer and we can move it around to where we need it sometimes, you know, we anchor our faith in our testimony of Jesus because that is the most tender to us. Sometimes we anchor our faith in scriptures that are really power powerful for us. Like our faith, it moves around in different areas.
And like you said, those little pieces of breadcrumbs where we see God's hand in our life, that also anchors our faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So really, our faith can move around and it's big and it's expansive and it's wide, but it's also personal and beautiful.
And the faith of a mustard seed can move mountains. Right. So it's. It's such a beautiful dynamic. Thank you so much for sharing. Bonnie, what are your thoughts?
Bonnie Randall
00:06:54.150 - 00:08:53.855
Well, I have too many. Where do I even start?
So, to piggyback off of what Tamara was saying about it being a versatile piece of the shield, being a versatile piece of armor, in addition to it being a defensive weapon. Right. A defensive part of the armor, it's also an offensive weapon. You can use a shield to fight. I think of Captain America. Right.
And it comes back to him. Right. It's a. It's not just that.
So we can use our faith also to not just protect ourselves and protect our testimonies and our family and things like that, but we can use it as a force to do good and a force to battle Satan. I read a book a few months ago called I Think it's Drawing on the Powers of Heaven.
And in it he talks about how faith is kind of like the electricity that runs through the light. The light. Like faith isn't the light. That's our testimony and that's the Christ or whatever. But he uses power to create things.
And you look back in the Bible, he used faith through his words to create the earth. Right. Moses parted the Red Sea using his faith. Right. Every great act that we see in the Bible is predicated with each of those people having faith.
And so faith is not just a Belief, while that's.
It's certainly the essential element to it, it is also the power that creates that belief and creates the movement in our lives and creates the movement in God's movement in our lives. Does that make sense?
Tiffany Fletcher
00:08:54.047 - 00:10:52.410
Yeah, absolutely. And I'd love. I'm gonna kind of take us back to Hebrews a little bit, too, with what.
What Tamara was saying, because in that chapter that talks about faith, it talked about. Sorry, I'm really fast together. So I talked about. You're talking about Moses and how Moses used faith to. To do the things that he needed to do.
Chapter 11 talks all about faith. Talks about how Noah needed faith, right, to build the ark. Like people were mocking him all the time. But.
But faith was the power that moved him to action even when people mocked him, right? And then if you. Hebrews 11, verses 33 to 30. I loved this. It talks about all these people who had faith and all the things that they did.
And then it says, who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in faith, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. There are so many things that we, with our faith, can do, because it is, like you said, it's not just a belief, it is a power.
And with that power, we can make miracles happen in our lives.
And it's such an incredible way to think about faith that it's not just our belief, it's our belief turned to action that helps us to do the things that God needs us to do. And so here's the question. So since we're talking about faith in our lives and how.
And in this series, we're talking about putting on the armor of light, how does faith then increase our light and our capacity to feel the spirit? Like, what is it that that faith does to our hearts as we use it to increase our light and shield us? Bonnie, let's go with you first.
Bonnie Randall
00:10:53.590 - 00:15:27.320
Oh, this is. I love this question. Because I think this is paramount to understanding how we can be protected in this world, right? We've talked about this.
I'm sure in previous episodes that we're in a spiritual war, right? And we are being bombarded all the time.
But as we exercise our faith, meaning as we put our faith into action, right, and we start off small, it might. As we. Probably a lot of us as we were kids, right, we started off with little prayers and little things.
And as we saw God working in our lives, that Built up our faith reserves, right? Kind of like again, if we take the power analogy, think of it, it like a, a battery, right?
And every time God shows us his hand in our life, we get a little bit more reserves in there. And every time we exercise faith and we do something saying, God, you told me to do this. I'm putting my trust in you, I'm going to do it.
And then it happens, we get a little more and a little more and a little more and we build up this amazing amount of power, this amazing amount of ability to do his work, right? So that when trials come, as they will for everybody, we're all in some sort of battle right now. We're on some sort of challenge when they come.
And we have to use that power reserve, right, to have faith and have trust. We won't be completely depleted, right, because we have built up this reserve. I wasn't planning on this, but I feel like I should share.
The last few months we've been trying to move and it's finally happening. But he told me a long time ago that I was supposed to move and that we were supposed to look for a farm. And he told me all the things.
And as I prayed and got more and more direction, little by little he would lead me and direct me and say different things. But it wasn't, it didn't happen all at once. It has taken a very long time and we have had tons of opposition, tons of opposition.
So many things have gone wrong.
When I found the house you were we're moving into, I heard an audible voice, which has only happened two other times, but an audible voice saying, welcome home, look no further. And you would think after hearing that, that it would have been smooth sailing after that, everything would have fallen into place.
The loan, our house, everything would have just like come together, right? No, not at all. In fact, for a time it looked like we weren't even going to move into that house because nothing was working out.
And I started thinking to myself, am I crazy? Did I really hear his voice? Did I, did I really feel these promptings? Is all of this real?
And my prayer started getting really desperate and I started saying, heavenly Father, you said this. I'm trying to trust, I'm trying to have faith. And his answers to me kept on saying, I got this, I got you. You're not going to fail.
Keep going, keep moving forward. And it was never like, I don't know how to explain it. The answers were never like, this is what you need to do. It was a, like, just trust Just trust.
Just trust. Just have faith. I already gave you the answer. Just have faith. I'm like, okay, okay.
And I started using up my faith restores my faith stores and started having to really rely on my testimony and the things that he had done for me previously to trust in that voice. And then a few weeks ago, things finally started coming back together and coming back around and here we are finally moving.
And it's been quite the trial of my faith. But it has taught me that opposition is an opportunity to turn to the Lord. And opposition doesn't have to win. It doesn't have to crumple us.
It doesn't have to destroy us. Right when we have faith and we have the armor of God on, we are protected and we can withstand the battle.

And we have the armor of God on. We are protected and we can withstand the battle.
Tiffany Fletcher
00:16:37.420 - 00:19:12.462
That's beautiful. Thank you for sharing that. That I, I love how you talked about the importance of how opposition is is something that can help us grow again.
I think that sometimes we look at a battle and we're like, oh, it's terrible. We shouldn't be fighting. I don't want to fight. But I mean, we live in a fallen world, so we're going to have battles if they're all around us.
And recognizing them as growth opportunities gives us the opportunity to stand in our power and stand in our faith. And I also loved how you talked about you had to rely on experiences that you saw in the past to help you build standards anchored in your faith.
I think sometimes, like my husband, I during COVID it was a really hard time for us, like, you know, and so he said, you know, Tiffany, I feel like that this is just something.
As we move forward towards the second coming of the Savior, we're going to more and more have these instances where we're going to feel sadness, we're going to feel like, trapped in a way.
And so he actually bought us all these little flashcards and he's like, I want you to write down all of your moments of joy and experiences with God that you've had in your life so that when you struggle, you can flip through this little card, these, these cards, and you can see all of the things that he has done in your life. And.
And for our anniversary, he took one of those little cards, little flip cards, and he put in there all of the memories that he loved about me and our family and all the things that he loved about me. So that when I am having one of. One of those days where I. My faith is.
Is shaking and I don't know where I stand, I can flip through that and I can remember all of the miracles, all of the blessings, all of the joy that has brought me to this point and it has made all the difference in my life just having those little things written down. Because sometimes when you're in that faith crisis or in that time when you're struggling, all those things don't come to your mind.
Satan makes you forget everything, right? He makes you forget things that matter.
And so when we can write them down and put them in a sacred space, we can go back and say, oh, I remember that God loves me. I remember his hand is in my life.
I remember that I have faith in him and that I trust him, because he hasn't let me fall before, so he's not going to let me fall now. I just have to be patient. I just have to trust and use my shield of faith to cover this part that is I'm struggling with in my life.
So thank you so much, Bonnie. Tamara, what are your thoughts?
Tamara K. Anderson
00:19:12.606 - 00:21:59.320
Oh, gosh.
As she was talking about that, I, I, when I was reading through Hebrews 11 in preparation for this, there was a verse that jumped out at me differently than I'd ever noticed before. And then it's verse six, and it's at the end of that verse that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.
And I love how that kind of ties all these things that we've been talking about together. Because when we're in the nitty gritty, we feel like we're slopping through muck and we're Just like, this is so hard.
There's a reward at the end of this. There better be a reward at the end of this. Like, what is this trial of my faith? This is so hard. You told me this. It's not happening. How.
How am I supposed to get through this? But it is. It's that faith. It's that hope that that kind of pulls us through. And we do. We have to cling to those. Those memories of things that he.
How he's helped us in the past, how he's gotten us through, how those trials have built that faith in Jesus Christ become even better and stronger. There's a reason that my favorite Bible verse is, I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.
Because I clung to that and I grew to believe it as I struggled through over a decade of kids being so, so hard, because I had two young ones on the autism spectrum, and they were so hard to teach and so hard to corral. And I literally lived in a state of constant stress, chronic stress, you know, day in, day out. They didn't sleep well.
So, you know, waking up at 2 or 3 in the morning, and I was tired, I was worn out. And I've had people say, how did you get through? And I'm just like, I don't know. There's so many of those years that are just a blur.
But I know it was through Jesus. You know, it was through Jesus.
I go back, and the few journal entries that I have, that is what I find, is that when I was weeping and sad and completely overwhelmed that I had to draw on him when my reserves were empty, like I was beyond, you know, I could have built UP reserves for 20 years and still not had enough to get me through that. But I think that's the beauty of faith, is that you can tap into the power of Christ, which is never going to run dry.
Bonnie Randall
00:21:59.980 - 00:22:17.720
I think that's a really important point, Tamara. Like our. We build those reserves and our battery up, but it doesn't ever go. Go dry. And I thank you for saying that. I'm sorry to interrupt you.
I just really appreciate that you said that because it's. Oh, that's just so true. My whole body is, like, tingling.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:22:18.700 - 00:24:24.950
Yeah. And so that. That is one. And so looking back, was it hard and difficult and awful and did I cry so many times and just falling on my knees weeping?
Yes. But can I look back on it and go, God got me through that, and it has it cemented in my heart and soul.
The power of drawing on Jesus Christ into My life, I could not have gotten through that on my own. There's just no way. I don't know. I just. I couldn't have. But with Christ, I could. And so I'm thankful that I.
I knew of Jesus, but I grew to really apply that scripture in Matthew of Come unto me all the ye that labor and are heavy laden. I will give you rest, take my yoke upon you. It is that yoking yourself to Jesus, because I am the.
Just picture a big strong oxen pulling a cart, and then like a little baby ox right beside it, going, dear Jesus, please help me, because my load is too heavy and I cannot do it. And that's really how I felt and how I saw myself was this tiny little oxen.
And I know yolks are supposed to be equal, but I tell you what, when you're yoked with Jesus, there is no equality in that yoking, because he is so much stronger than we are. But for some reason, he is so good and so merciful that he helps us pull that load when we lean on Him.
And so it builds, those moments of trial and anguish build that faith to become sure and unshaken. And it turns from faith to a knowledge. Look what I could do with him.
Tiffany Fletcher
00:24:26.850 - 00:26:31.290
I love that. Tamara, that is so beautiful. I think that when we see Christ as our shield, like when he becomes our shield and our protection, he covers all of us.
We don't have to move it around. He covers everything, all of us.
And it's an all encompassing kind of faith when we put that faith in him, where we just give it to him and just lay it all on the altar and say, lord, this is too heavy for me. I need you to cover me with this. And that's how we grow our faith. When we realize that it's not about us, it is about Him.
And it is about putting on him and learning to, like you said, yoke ourselves with him, anchor ourselves with Him. I love the image of lighthouses. They just. They're so beautiful to me. I grew up with a troubled childhood. Mom who had multiple personalities.
And I remember my sister sent me a lighthouse and said, tiffany, even though we had a troubled childhood, we can still. We can still be a light for others. And I always take it back to Christ, like anchoring in him and shining his light.
And that is what got me through all of the hard things that I would never, ever been able to get through if it wasn't for anchoring in him and using him as a shield to cover me through all of the Abuse and all of the hard things that I went through as a child and being able to come out stronger and still push back the darkness in my life because of him. So I just find that very beautiful and such a beautiful way of bringing everything together and just. And focusing on Him. And so we are.
We are about out of time. So let's talk about what are our takeaways from today? So what is. What is something that. That.
That you've taken away that you're going to apply or is just something else? If you have anything else that you'd like to share. Tamara, let's start with you.
Tamara K. Anderson
00:26:31.450 - 00:28:24.218
I love what you just said about his shield. Covers us completely. That image I'm almost looking like, in my mind, I'm picturing, like, this ginormous force field around me.
And I was also thinking, you know, there are moments when. Those moments when we feel so overwhelmed that we just need to hide in Christ. Hide behind Him. Hide in Him.
And in fact, I think there was a verse I read preparing for this, and I'd have to look for it and find it, but. Sorry, I have, like, an entire notebook full of topics that I've studied about the gospel and stuff like that. Anyway, I'll. I'll have to find it.
But I love that image of us hiding in Christ, that He can be our sheep shield, that we can be protected when. When we feel like the attacks are too hard, too heavy, they've gone on for too long, that we can maybe hunker down behind Jesus.
He's our God in general and in this fight and trust that he's got us in those moments when things are just too hard. And so I think.
I think that's my big takeaway is that through all the hardness of life and the hard times that we experience, that we can lean on him and be yoked to him and allow our. Sometimes when we feel weak, just hiding for a moment in Him. You know, I picture the chicken under.
You know, he gathers like chickens under little chicks under his wings. That's an image that he talks about. And so, yeah, that's kind of what I'm thinking about. Okay, go ahead.
Bonnie Randall
00:28:24.274 - 00:28:24.954
I love that.
Tiffany Fletcher
00:28:25.042 - 00:28:26.750
Thank you, Bonnie.
Bonnie Randall
00:28:27.250 - 00:30:26.900
I think my major takeaway today is that while our faith can move mountains and it can work great miracles when we're yoked with Christ and our. And our power comes from Him. Right. I really appreciated Tamara reminding me that sometimes we might feel more like the.
Was it the centurion who went to him looking for a miracle for one of his kids? And. And he said, help thou my unbelief. When we have those moments and we feel like our tank is completely empty, he will make up the rest.
He will take, take care of it, and he can do everything. His tank never goes empty.
And I really appreciated that reminder today because I do feel like the trials of this life are just getting harder and harder as we prepare for the second coming, things are just getting crazier and crazier. Wickedness is not hiding anymore. It's just out there in plain sight. And we're bombarded all the time. But we don't need to fear.
Faith conquers all fear, right? They're total opposites of each other. And when we can at least have that little mustard seed, right? We should have. We should have had that.
We should have brought our little, tiny, little bitty mustard seed, right?
If you don't know what I'm talking about, go to the grocery store and go find in the seasoning aisle the mustard seeds, and you will see how unbelievably tiny they are. And he's saying, just that little bit can move mountains, because you have me on your side. I will do all the heavy lifting.
Like Tamara saying with the yoke, right? He'll do all the heavy lifting. We just have to call out to him and say, help. So thank you for that beautiful reminder today.
Tiffany Fletcher
00:30:27.680 - 00:31:54.900
Thank you. I think for me, I was thinking about it. I think sometimes in my life, I put down my shield of faith and I forget that I have it.
And I think that for me, I want to remember that that shield of faith is there. That when the trials come, that is an added layer of protection. And as I show myself using Christ, you know, as that shield.
And I love the force field, like that whole sphere of light and protection, right, that can keep us safe from those fiery darts. Like, if we shield ourselves in Christ, there is not an inch of us that the adversary can harm.
He cannot hit us with his fiery darts if we are shielded in Christ. And I mean, clearly there'll be times where he will try and life will get hard, but with Christ, he covers it all, and I love that.
I think that's beautiful. Well, thank you so much for being with us today in this episode of Bible Women in Bathrobes.
Now, the question for you is, what are you going to do as you move away from this podcast and you go out in your own life and life happens? How are you going to use the shield of faith in your life?
My challenge to you today is to find those things that will help you strengthen your faith, to pick up your shield of faith, to use it in the places where you need to, and to anchor above all, your faith in the Savior. Until next time, have a great day.
